Do Obesity Doctors Really Understand? These Three Do.
Dr. Matthea Rentea, Dr. Catherine Toomer, and Dr. Brianna Bingham discuss what medical training can’t teach about living with obesity.
Dr. Matthea Rentea, Dr. Catherine Toomer, and Dr. Brianna Bingham are obesity medicine physicians who have chosen to share not only their expertise, but also their own experiences with obesity treatment, including GLP-1 medications, bariatric surgery, and long-term weight management.
That willingness to bring both expertise and lived experience into public conversations has had a profound impact on many patients, including me.
Long before I became involved in obesity advocacy, I was learning from physicians like these through social media. They helped me better understand obesity as a chronic disease, make sense of treatment options, and see possibilities for my own future that I hadn’t considered before.
Tomorrow night, Zach Niemiec and I will bring all three together for a conversation about their obesity journeys, what medical training gets right and wrong about obesity, how treatment became personal, and how living with the disease has shaped the way they care for patients.
For many people living with obesity, these physicians have helped make sense of a disease that is often misunderstood, even within healthcare itself. I’m excited to hear what happens when we bring all three perspectives together.
